Who is Tyson Venegas? American Idol’s Platinum Ticket winner! Last year, American Idol introduced the Platinum Ticket to commemorate the show’s 20th anniversary. This exclusive ticket is awarded to only one performer from each of the three audition sites (Las Vegas, New Orleans, and Nashville). It allows the winner to skip the initial brutal phase of Hollywood Week and watch from the audience.
American Idol judges Lionel Richie, Luke Perry, and Katy Perry awarded the first of three tickets to 17-year-old Tyson Venegas from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The Filipino Canadian’s rendition of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind” left the judges impressed, with Lionel jokingly commenting on his mature performance and requesting Tyson’s mother’s presence in the room. I was completely blown away by this young man’s vocal prowess. Additionally, he played the piano flawlessly! Pinoy Pride, indeed!
Iris, Tyson’s mom, surprised the judges by revealing that one of the earliest concerts he attended was Lionel Richie. He had been inspired by the singer to sing from his heart and tell stories. Lionel acknowledged the role reversal, stating that Tyson had inspired them with his spot-on professional performance.
Katy complimented Tyson’s unique singing style, which made her feel connected and alive. Meanwhile, Luke praised Tyson as the ideal candidate that they look and pray for in a contestant. The judges then awarded Tyson the coveted Platinum Ticket, with Lionel joking that it was in an exclusive area beyond the Golden Ticket. Watch video of his performance below!
Tyson’s love for music began at an early age, and his parents used it to develop his speech since he was speech-delayed. From an early age, Tyson’s favorite musicians included iconic artists such as The Beatles, Michael Jackson, and Stevie Wonder. Lionel Richie remained a significant influence on Tyson, who told his mom that he wanted to make people happy through music.
Aside from the three Platinum Tickets awarded by the judges, viewers were given the opportunity to vote for one more ticket during the American Music Awards in November. Elijah McCormick, Matt Wilson, and Haven Madison were the three contenders, with Elijah receiving the most votes and earning the Platinum Ticket. Haven was awarded a Golden Ticket. Matt’s fate is yet to be determined.
Tyson’s performance basically left the judges and viewers looking forward to what he has in store for the competition. I can’t wait for next week’s episode!
