Iam Tongi, a high school student from Kahuku, Hawaii, recently delivered a powerful performance on “American Idol” that left the judges and audience in tears. Heartbreaking Backstory
Tongi has been a fan favorite since his initial audition last month. He performed a beautiful rendition of “Monsters” by James Blunt that left all three judges in tears.
Since the “Showstopper” performance was shared on April 10, the video has 3.5 million views on YouTube, with many people commenting on Tongi’s emotional backstory. The contestant’s father passed away a few years ago, and Tongi’s mother said that his dad became sick and realized that “his days were limited.” They started recording videos of Tongi singing with his father a few months before he passed away, which Tongi turns to a lot and plays while he sleeps.
Emotional Judges
While Tongi performed, his mother shared his emotional backstory, which made judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan visibly emotional. Perry and Richie shared tissues while watching the performance.
Standing Ovation
After Tongi finished singing, the teen received a standing ovation and said, “I love you, Mom!” into the microphone. Perry was then seen speaking to Tongi and telling him that “The Sound of Silence” song choice was “brilliant.” She let Tongi know that he had earned a spot in the Top 24.
Perry then announced that this season of “American Idol” will actually have a Top 26, and that two other contestants, Colin Stough and Matt Wilson, have also made it to the next round.
